Nosferatu
Travel back in time with the Eerie Horror Fest and the Erie Philharmonic for a screening of the 1922 silent film, Nosferatu, on the big screen. We will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of this groundbreaking work of fear and suspense with the live accompaniment of the newly installed Wurlitzer Theatre Organ in the Warner Theatre. A live pipe organist adds drama and improvisation to the Nosferatu score, making it a true one-of-a-kind performance. Join us Wednesday, October 5th as we recreate the haunting experience of seeing this macabre film for the first time.
Nosferatu is a 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). Various names and other details were changed from the novel; for instance, “vampire” became “nosferatu”, and “Count Dracula” became “Count Orlok”.
Stoker’s heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered that all copies of the film be destroyed. However, a few prints of Nosferatu survived. It is not only regarded as one of the most intriguing and disquieting films to have been produced during the years of Weimar cinema, but it is also considered a key step in establishing the vampire as a cinematic figure and a mainstay of our subconscious fears and desires.
The story unfolds as German real estate agent Thomas Hutter leaves his wife in the care of friends and visits Transylvania to meet a new client, Count Orlok (Max Schreck). Terror ensues as Count Orlok’s vampire nature is revealed alongside a growing interest in Ellen, Hutter’s loving wife.
Max Schreck’s eerie performance as Count Orlok was heightened by the fact that, through the magic of editing, the character never blinks throughout the entire movie.
